Uptown Presents: Movies on The Lawn

10/27/20

New event series begins Oct. 29 with massive glowing lanterns, food trucks and Halloween flicks

Alien visitations, pumpkin lanterns, Dia De Los Muertos masks and spooky movies are coming to Uptown, the mixed-use community surrounding the Lindbergh Center MARTA station and being redeveloped by Rubenstein Partners (Rubenstein). From Oct. 29 through Nov. 1, The Lawn at Uptown, the expansive greenspace along Lindbergh Drive, will host a free, four-night film series featuring Halloween classics at dusk alongside socially distanced, family-friendly activities.

In addition to Halloween-themed movies on the big LED screen, the outdoor events will feature food trucks, crafts for all ages and special character appearances (such as giant lantern puppets). The Lawn at Uptown is accessible via MARTA and bike paths. Complimentary parking validations for the deck on Garson Drive will be also provided.

“Since acquiring Uptown last year, the world has dramatically changed, and we recognize the importance of creating open-air gathering places for the community to come together,” said Taylor Smith, Regional Director of the Southeast at Rubenstein. “Launching this movie series is an important step in our plans to infuse new energy into Uptown’s community spaces, and we’re looking forward to bringing The Lawn to life.”

Registration and rotating food trucks provided by the Street Food Coalition, a collection of 140 local purveyors, will begin nightly at 6 p.m. Details for each event are outlined below:

  • E.T. – Thursday, 10/29
    • Before the screening from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m., guests can experience an alien visitation by the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons’ newest giant lantern puppets, Bingo, Ingo and Catsiopia, created by local artist Chantelle Rytter for the Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade-In-Place. The film will begin at 7:30 p.m.
  • The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and Monsters, Inc. – Friday, 10/30
    • The first 50 guests to arrive will receive a complimentary pumpkin lantern-making kit from Chantelle Rytter. Once completed, attendees are encouraged to place their lanterns on the lawn near their seating area to create a community-illuminated pumpkin patch. The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown will begin at 7 p.m., with Monsters Inc. to follow immediately after.
  • Hocus Pocus – Saturday, 10/31
    • The first 50 attendees will receive a complimentary pumpkin lantern-making kit from Chantelle Rytter. Once completed, attendees are encouraged to place their lanterns on the lawn near their seating area to create a community-illuminated pumpkin patch. In celebration of Halloween, costumes are encouraged and trick-or-treat goodie bags will be available while supplies last. The movie will begin at 7 p.m.
  • Coco – Sunday, 11/1
    • In honor of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a holiday celebrating Mexican culture and heritage, the first 100 attendees will receive festive Day of the Dead masks. The film will start at 7 p.m.

Guests are required to register in advance to secure a physically distanced ring for up to four people, each of which will be placed at least six feet apart, and encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs. To reserve a spot, please visit: www.eventbrite.com/uptown-movies-on-the-lawn.

Movie-goers will be required to wear a mask unless they are within their assigned area (spooky masks and costumes are encouraged!). Ticket entry will be contactless and hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the community spaces.

Coming as part of the activation strategy at Uptown, The Hambidge Center debuted its Cross-Pollination Art Lab, which transformed 12,000 square feet of former retail and restaurant space along Piedmont Ave. into a series of art galleries, studios and performance spaces. The Lab is open to the public (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Face coverings are required within the space, and a limited number of people will be allowed inside at one time.

Uptown will also soon play host to youth and adult league soccer games with Station Soccer, a Soccer in the Streets initiative in partnership with MARTA, Atlanta United and the City of Atlanta. Two soccer fields for the upcoming season have been constructed, marking Station Soccer’s fourth metro Atlanta location.

Throughout the holiday season, Uptown will continue to host festive events for the community. Next year, Uptown will launch its Signature Events series, which will include weekly activations on The Lawn. Social media pages for Uptown have been launched to engage the community. About Uptown

Uptown is a hyper-accessible, 47-acre mixed-use community that brings the best of Atlanta together. As the largest mixed-use development in Atlanta to connect directly with MARTA and the city’s major pedestrian trails, such as the forthcoming Atlanta BeltLine and the South Fork Trail, Uptown combines 110,000 square feet of street-level retail, greenspace and art and one million square feet of Class A office space. Uptown is being redeveloped by private real estate investment management and advisory firm Rubenstein Partners, LP (Rubenstein). Redevelopment plans include upgrading building facades, streetscapes and greenspaces; activating the property with local retail, artist galleries, restaurants and events; and attracting office tenants who value working in a vibrant mixed-use environment. Atlanta has a Downtown, a Midtown, a Buckhead, and now, finally, an Uptown. To learn more about Uptown, visit uptownatlanta.com and follow @UptownAtlanta on Facebook and Instagram.
