The Atlanta Apartment Association (AAA) wrapped up its 33rd annual Food-A-Thon on Friday, Oct. 18, complete with a vibrant parade and celebration in which AAA members drove their floats to the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s Westside location to deliver food and donations. This marks the last Food-A-Thon to take place before the Food Bank relocates from their location on Joseph E. Lowery Blvd to their new facility in East Point, Georgia.
“Over the past several decades, we’ve leveraged our incredible member organizations and apartment residents around the city of Atlanta to make a real impact on hunger in Georgia by contributing over 118 million meals,” said Tracy Bowers, AAA chair and managing director at Matrix Residential. “This year’s Food-A-Thon represented a special good-bye to the food bank’s current location, and we’re excited to make new memories next year in East Point.”
The money and food donations raised this year will provide 8,393,631 meals for food insecure individuals and families around metro Atlanta and north Georgia. Appropriately themed “The Farewell Tour” to acknowledge the Food Bank’s upcoming move, the Food-A-Thon featured creative costumes, festive music, fun games and delicious food. The parade floats, each carrying AAA members, processed into the Food Bank to donate their food and money donations before finishing off the celebrations with a block party.
"This year's Food-A-Thon raised a record breaking amount of food and funds, which is incredibly humbling and inspiring! We're grateful for the continued support of the Atlanta Apartment Association, which consistently allows us to give back to those who are food insecure in our community" said Kyle Waide, President and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
As one of the largest food and fund drives in the country, the Food-A-Thon encourages AAA members to bring together their apartment communities and residents to raise donations for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The Food-A-Thon has raised enough donations for over 118 million meals since its beginning. This year, the Food-A-Thon began on June 19th and ran until the day of the parade and celebration.
Since opening in 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank has worked to provide a solution and response to the ongoing problem of hunger and nationwide food waste. Statistics show that 16.2% of people living in Georgia are food insecure, with every 1 in 4 children living in food insecure households. Thanks to the partnership of caring community members around greater Atlanta, the Food Bank has raised enough money through their efforts to produce millions of meals to feed those in need.
