Chevrolet Introduces New Industry-First Safety Feature

5/22/19

Chevrolet’s industry-first Buckle to Drive feature is available when the vehicle is in Teen Driver mode. If the vehicle is on and the driver’s seat belt is not buckled, the feature is designed to not allow the driver to shift out of park for up to 20 seconds. When the brake pedal is pressed, the driver will hear an audible alert and see a message in the driver information center that reads “Buckle seat belt to shift.”

Today, Chevrolet introduced a new industry-first feature called, Buckle to Drive, which can help remind Georgia drivers to buckle up before driving. When this feature is activated, the driver will be prohibited from driving until their seatbelt is fastened and there will be a physical and audible alert. This feature builds upon Chevrolet’s Teen Driver technology (an industry-first in-vehicle report card), as another step to help keep teen drivers safe on the road, and will be standard in the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse.

Buckling your seat belt is the number one action drivers can take to protect themselves in a crash, according to NHTSA. Tragically, teens have among the lowest rates of seat belt use. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (BASED IN ATLANTA), the majority of teenagers involved in fatal crashes are unbuckled.

This is also timely, as Memorial Day Weekend and the summer driving season is upon us, which serves as a good reminder for everyone hitting the road to buckle up and practice safe driving habits.
