Stevens & Wilkinson (S&W), a full-service architecture, engineering and interior design firm, announced associate architect Laura Morton has been named communications director of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Atlanta chapter. Morton was also one of 16 people to be selected statewide to the Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program (CKLDP).

Beginning in 2013, the AIA Washington D.C. chapter undertook an initiative to develop the CKLDP. The mission of the program is to help train and nurture the next generation of leaders. As part of the year-long program, Morton will attend nine individual half-day sessions along with the rest of the competitively selected group of emerging professionals. An emerging professional, by CKLDP definition, is someone who has graduated from college with an architecture degree and is within 10 years of their first licensure. In order to be considered for this position, Morton was asked to go through an extensive application process where proven career success, community involvement and her firm’s support were considered.

“It is a great honor to be selected for the Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program,” Morton said. “I look forward to sharpening my skills as a leader and applying what I learn to my work at Stevens & Wilkinson.”

In addition to being selected to the CKLDP, Morton was also named communications director of AIA Atlanta, an organization she has been active in since March 2018. The 2019 board of directors was announced late last year at the Build Something Great awards presentation. Through her involvement with the organization, Morton has played a crucial role in elevating the profession of architecture in the Atlanta community.

As the communications director, Morton manages external and internal communications activities, including the advertising, marketing and media relations efforts of AIA Atlanta. She also directs and oversees the communications and awards programs that effectively promote and position AIA Atlanta as a prominent organization.

“Laura is one of our most energetic and dynamic associates,” said Bill Clark, AIA, LEED AP, principal and president at S&W, “As past president of AIA Atlanta, I have enjoyed watching her grow as a leader over the years and look forward to seeing her thrive in her role as communications director at AIA Atlanta.”
