Developer partners with Copenhagen-based design firm to employ a new “cycle-ology”

Grubb Properties has partnered with Copenhagenize Design Company, a world-renowned multi-disciplinary team dedicated to bicycle culture, planning, traffic and communications, to make bicycle culture an integral part of the urban landscape at Park at Perimeter Center East in Dunwoody, Ga. As the first private developer in the U.S. to work with Copenhagenize, Grubb Properties plans to make Park at Perimeter Center East a model for future mixed-use bicycle communities in Atlanta and beyond.
Copenhagenize specializes in developing effective bicycle systems in cities around the globe. A team of passionate individuals that works toward making cities better places to live, Copenhagenize believes increasing the number of bicycle users in any city is an essential part of improving quality of life. The benefits of building for bicycle users of all ages and abilities in Dunwoody include less traffic and pollution, increased social interaction, and encouragement of a healthy and active lifestyle.
“We are excited to bring new, innovative, bicycle urbanism ideas to Dunwoody,” said Michael Seth Wexler, Urban Designer at Copenhagenize. “Cycling for transport brings with it a social element and helps foster a sense of community. Once we step out of our vehicles and choose to cycle, even just to the local store, we are able to participate in face-to-face interaction with our fellow citizens. We are proud to partner with Grubb Properties and be a driving force behind bringing best practice design ideas to Park at Perimeter Center East to help develop another local transportation option for residents.”
Park at Perimeter Center East is strategically located within biking distance of key destinations and economic drivers in Dunwoody, such as Perimeter Mall, Sandy Springs MARTA Station, Northside Hospital, Cox Headquarters, Newell Brands and Manheim, reducing the need for motor vehicles. Creating a safe and accessible biking community that encourages people to stop and speak with neighbors is one of the central objectives of this project. By activating the existing parking lots at Park at Perimeter Center East, Grubb Properties minimizes the overall amount of surface parking, and the city gains a 2-acre park.
“When working with the community to tailor our plan for the Park at Perimeter Center East to meet the needs and desires of Dunwoody residents, we’ve maintained a strong focus on walkability and bikeability,” said Paul O’Shaughnessy, senior development associate at Grubb Properties. “As Dunwoody continues to grow these core values will play an important role in making the city a great place to live and work. Copenhagen is the leading bicycle city in the world, which makes it the best city model for our Dunwoody design. We look forward to working with the Copenhagenize team to make our vision a reality.”
Grubb Properties recently gained approval from the Dunwoody Planning Commission and Dunwoody Homeowners Association for the Park at Perimeter Center East plan. The first reading from Grubb Properties to the Dunwoody City Council took place on November 5. The rezoning vote for the site from Office Industrial PC-2, or Perimeter Center subarea 2, will be on December 10.
