Homebuilder generates sense of community through street art at the crossroads of East Lake, Kirkwood and Oakhurst

Edward Andrews Homes (EA Homes) redefines the meaning of community at its latest intown home development, Bixton. Located at the intersection of Kirkwood, East Lake and Oakhurst, Bixton is a lifestyle-centric community that seamlessly connects to the area’s main thoroughfare and attractions via two artful staircases deemed, ‘Stairway to Hosea.’

Designed and painted by EA Homes’ team, vibrant splashes of color transform two otherwise bare, concrete staircases that lead from Cottage Grove Avenue up to 2nd Avenue and Hosea L Williams Drive. The concept of the mural was created by the EA Homes team to serve as a neighborhood identifier that draws people in and makes them feel a true sense of community through a visual journey and artful backdrop. It also seamlessly blends with the popular existing East Lake mural under the bridge by adding vitality to the underpass.

“At EA Homes, we believe in creating experience-driven and purposeful communities that contribute to the connectivity of the area and co-exist with surrounding neighborhoods,” said Caroline Simmel, chief marketing officer for EA Homes. “With Bixton, we’re excited to be within walking distance to local restaurants, parks and schools in a growing city landscape, and the mural serves as a gateway to Atlanta’s vibrant intown lifestyle. The idea for the mural goes far beyond the art element and elevates the community as a whole, establishing a sense of place and providing a ‘sharable’ moment for those living here or just passing by.”

The art, which complements other murals and art installations around the neighborhood, is inspired by the community’s tagline, ‘Joy Around Every Corner.’ The steps were positioned to face outward to the community establishing a strong sense of place. Neighbors are encouraged to post their photos with the mural and staircases using the hashtag #StairwayToHosea.

“Our inspiration for the mural came from our vision of the vibrant lifestyle at Bixton and played off the colors from the existing mural along the Cottage Grove tunnel,” said Jenny NeSmith, marketing director for EA Homes. “We used a carefully-curated color palette to create an ombré design and bring life to the once dark and dull space. Like Bixton, #StairwayToHosea has been designed as a fresh, stylish and playful place to connect.”

Weaving into the fabric of the surrounding neighborhoods, Bixton brings a porch-sitting, kids-playing, street-light-popping-on kind of life to intown Atlanta. With local amenities that encourage community involvement and an energetic lifestyle paired with new single-family homes inspired by a comfort-driven approach to beautiful design, Bixton is a welcomed addition to the area. The unexpected smile of art woven into the community is something that residents and neighbors alike can appreciate.

“I love the extra pop of color on my morning walks,” says one East Lake neighbor passing by the mural. “It just makes you happy.”

Homes at Bixton are available in two- and three-story floorplans with expansive porches featuring three-bedroom options ranging from 2,400 to 2,600+ square feet. Residents at Bixton will also have access to “the backyard,” a green space located in the center of the community. Priced from the high $400s, Bixton is currently open for sales at neighboring EA Homes community The Swift.
