Historic Cheraw Home, Boxwood Hall, Hits Market

5/14/18

A historic antebellum home, Boxwood Hall, has entered the market for $319,500, it was announced today by Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. Located at 317 Market Street in Cheraw, this unique property offers the opportunity to own a piece of local – and American – history. Melissa McCoy of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty’s Charlotte office is the exclusive listing associate. View the property listing here.

Built in 1822, Boxwood Hall sits on over an acre of land. The home’s wrap-around porch is the perfect picture of Southern charm, and many of the interior features, such as three wood-burning fireplaces, claw-foot tub and heart-of-pine floors, are characteristic of the time period. Owned by the same family since 1971, Boxwood Hall has been beautifully maintained and thoroughly modernized. The home’s back room, originally built as a kitchen and later used as a storage room, has been completely renovated and features its own central unit, half bath, laundry facilities and a floor-to-ceiling cabinet perfect for housing an entertainment center. Recent updates to the bathrooms and kitchen combine Boxwood Hall’s Old South charm with modern-day conveniences.

Listed in the National Register as part of the Cheraw Historic District, Boxwood Hall comes complete with a Civil War story. According to local legend, during General Sherman’s occupation of Cheraw in 1865, a cannonball struck and damaged the home’s porch. Fearing that the Union soldiers would pillage the house, the family living in the home at the time hid food, and placed a ham in the attic. A grease stain still remains on the ceiling where the ham was hidden.

Property features include:

  • Four bedrooms; 3 and one-half bathrooms
  • Three wood-burning stoves
  • Upstairs plumbing replaced with PVC less than five years ago
  • Recently-added brick arbor and patio located adjacent to the back room.
  • Four separate HVC zones
  • Tiled kitchen and bathroom floors
