Firm recognized for historic masonry rehabilitation project at Sweetwater Creek State Park

Stevens & Wilkinson, a full-service integrated architecture, engineering and interior design firm based in Atlanta, announced today that its Sweetwater Creek Mill ruins stabilization project has been selected as a 2018 American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia (ACEC Georgia) state award winner. NOVA Engineering and Environmental is also recognized as Stevens & Wilkinson’s partner on the project.

The two firms teamed to provide forensic engineering evaluation, repair design and construction administration services at the historic Sweetwater Creek Mill Ruins in Lithia Springs, Georgia. Originally constructed in 1846 as a five-story water powered mill for production of clothing and other materials, the mill was destroyed in 1864. Currently, the remnants of the structure are being preserved, and the goal of the project was to bolster existing masonry components around architectural features such as the original window openings and archways and help minimize continued erosion to prolong the life of the structure.

“Stevens & Wilkinson is proud to help protect this architectural landmark,”said Bill Clark, principal and president of Stevens &Wilkinson’s Atlanta office. “By partnering with the talented professionals at NOVA Engineering and Environmental on this project, we were able to help maintain the cultural significance of thiskey investment for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.”

The Engineering Excellence Awards are an annual design competition by ACEC Georgia. The Engineering Excellence Awards recognize engineering achievements demonstrating the highest degree of merit and ingenuity. Entries are rated based on uniqueness and originality; future value to the engineering profession; social, economic and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of the client/owner’s needs.

All winners will be recognized during the Georgia Engineering Awards ceremony on February 24at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead.
