Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partner W. Scott Sorrels will be recognized with the prestigious Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service by the State Bar of Georgia. The award will be presented to Mr. Sorrels during a special awards ceremony on February 28, 2017, at the offices of the State Bar of Georgia.
The Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service is given by the State Bar of Georgia to lawyers and judges in Georgia who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and demonstrate the positive contributions of members of the Bar outside of their professional work. Mr. Sorrels joins Partner Peter J. Anderson and Sutherland alums Bill Barwick and Judy O’Brien, who were recognized with the award in previous years.
“Scott’s commitment to providing the highest quality of services to his clients and community has benefited many clients and numerous organizations and individuals around the country,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “This is a well-deserved honor for Scott, and we congratulate him on this superb recognition.”
Mr. Sorrels provides a wide range of volunteer service and leadership to worldwide, national and local nonprofit and charitable youth-development organizations. Most notably, he volunteers significant hours each month in support of World Scouting, which serves more than 40 million youth worldwide, and nationally, to the Boy Scouts of America. In 2011, the Boy Scouts of America recognized Mr. Sorrels with the highest honor the organization gives for contributions to youth leadership, the Silver Buffalo award. Other Silver Buffalos include S. Truett Cathy, Hank Aaron, Bill Gates, Gen. Colin Powell, Charles Lindbergh, Walt Disney, John Glenn and 13 presidents.
Currently, Mr. Sorrels serves on the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America and for the past eight years has served as National Commissioner Service Chair, the number two Commissioner leadership position in the United States. Mr. Sorrels is chair of the trustees and council attorney for the Boy Scouts of America’s Northeast Georgia Council and serves on the executive boards of both the Atlanta Area and Northeast Georgia Councils.
Mr. Sorrels is now embracing his greatest challenge ever as a Scout leader, serving as co-chair of the 24th World Scout Jamboree, an epic 12-day event to be held in 2019 that will bring together 50,000 Scouts, male and female, ages 14 through 17, from more than 200 nations and territories to a sprawling 10,000-acre campsite in West Virginia. A world jamboree is held every four years at various locations around the globe. The 24th World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by Scouts Canada, Scouts Mexico and the Boy Scouts of America.
“Scott’s dedication to Scouting hasn’t precluded other leadership in the community and in the legal profession,” said Sutherland Partner Peter J. Anderson. “He supports various Georgia-based organizations, including the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Midtown Alliance, and his commitment to the firm’s clients is unfaltering. It is an honor to have Scott as our partner, and he is very deserving of this recognition.”
At Sutherland, Mr. Sorrels represents clients in banking and securities litigation, corporate investigations and regulatory enforcement. With more than 30 years of experience, including three years at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, he has represented corporate boards or committees in more than 70 internal investigations throughout the United States and the world, and he frequently speaks or writes on corporate governance issues.
